Our Community Manager, Raluca Manea, participated between 20-27 July 2019 in the XXIV edition of the Portuguese Atlantic Youth Seminar at the Military Academy of Lisbon, organised by the Associação da Juventude Portuguesa do Atlântico with the support of the Comissão Portuguesa do Atlântico.

NATO's 70th Anniversary

The central theme of this year’s seminar has been NATO’s 70th anniversary and the debates revolved around the strategic role of the Alliance in line with the challenges ahead. A wide range of relevant and timely subjects such as transatlantic security relations, democracy in the new world order, hybrid warfare and terrorism, European strategic autonomy and the EU as a global actor, the challenges related to Russia and China, deterrence in the Korean Peninsula and disinformation and populism were tackled during the sessions and lectures delivered by high-level officials, professors and experts in their respective policy fields. The diverse backgrounds and policy interests of the participants contributed to creating a dynamic environment and lively debates which made interaction constructive and interesting.

The seminar also included a practical exercise – namely a policy workshop dividing participants in 6 groups aimed at producing recommendations for the next 70 years of NATO. Our Community Manager acted as the Redactor of the Committee on Institutional Dialogue whose work focused on the Alliance’s commitment to multilateralism and its relations with institutional counterparts such as the European Union (EU), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the United Nations (UN) and the prospects for cooperation with the African Union (AU), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other regional organizations.
